Mount Stewart National Trust Building

Mount Stewart National Trust Building

A prestigious project with a challenging and strict National Trust specification. Mount Stewart is an 18th century building and needed to be refurbished up to 17th edition specification, yet kept in its original decor. This three year project involved using tebis to give full control of scene sets and tour guide walk through, as well as landlord and security management using KNX. The fact that one cable can run throughout the building, instead of multiple cables, made Hager KNX an obvious choice.

The project to restore Mount Stewart has now been completed. Bringing back the elegance and charm of the house when it was home of the 7th Marchioness Edith, Lady Londonderry. The restoration project saw the repair of structural defects while improving heating, plumbing, drainage, lighting, fire systems and security. The restoration was carried out by a large team of staff, volunteers, contractors and specialists.

Amongst the busiest of the subcontractors during the restoration were the electricians, Irwins Electrical Contractors, a local family business run by John Irwin. The team leader Brian, started as an apprentice over 25 years ago and has worked for Irwins for 11 years. Together with his team of ten – four apprentices and six electricians, Brian was often seen pouring over maps of the house, figuring out the routes for all of the wiring. The whole building was rewired, using pyro wire, which is incredibly stiff and difficult to bend and work with. Pushing the electrical wires under floor boards and through gaps takes a lot of time and effort, however, it is the toughest and most fire proof wiring about, so Mount Stewart should be safe from electrical fires for many years. Irwins also installed wiring for an upgraded alarm system, and sensors were then attached and commissioned.

Hager products were chosen as the best solution to this restoration project, using tebis to give full control of scene sets and tour guide walk through, as well as landlord and security management using KNX. The fact that one cable can run throughout the building, instead of multiple cables, made KNX an obvious choice.
